DIVERSITY, EQUALITY AND RESPECT

The case study below is typical of those used as part of the workshop to stimulate discussion and highlight discrimination issues arising from areas such as disability.

CASE STUDY

Ted is a plumber. Following an injury playing rugby, he experiences epileptic fits when under stress. Ted has applied for a job with a large construction firm. He has been open about his health throughout the selection process. The Health and Safety Manager wants to turn Ted down on health and safety grounds.

  1. Would not employing Ted on the ground of health and safety consistute discrimination?
  2. What obligations does the construction firm have?
  3. What organisational benefits might there be in employing Ted?
