INSTITUTE OF HEALTH AND CARE DEVELOPMENT (IHCD) DRIVER TRAINING

The IHCD Ambulance Driving course is seen as the industry standard qualification for ambulance services both in the public and independent sector. Achievement of this qualification will greatly improve employment prospects for those seeking a career in pre-hospital emergency care.

EMSTAR is a fully accredited training provider for the IHCD Ambulance Driving Course. All of our driving instructors are IHCD accredited and have a wealth of experience in ambulance services as well as other emergency services.                                               

The IHCD course consists of 2 separate modules:

Module B
Non emergency driving (1 week)

Module C
Emergency driving (2 weeks)                                                      

There are no specific entry requirements to the course but candidates must hold a full driving licence valid for use in the UK. Candidate MUST complete module B prior to commencing Module C.

The course covers all aspects of the IHCD syllabus as outlined below

B1:1 Ambulance driving and the Highway code

B1:2 Vehicle daily inspection

B1:3 Driving plans and the system of vehicle control

B1:4 Acceleration

B1:5 Braking

B1:6 Steering

B1:7 Reversing

B1:8 Manual gearbox

 Optional Units


B1:9 Skids

B1:10 Automatic gearbox

 Module C

C1:1 Road traffic law

C1:2  The system of vehicle control

C1:3  Speed and safety

C1:4 Positioning

C1:5 Corners and bends

C1:6 Overtaking

C1:7 Skids

C1:8 Night driving

C1:9 Motorway driving

In addition to the above candidates will also undertake a number of supervised drivers under emergency blue light conditions
