The Equality Act became law on 1 October 2010. It introduces new legislation as well as strengthening and extending existing legislation. ARE YOU PREPARED for this new and challenging legislation ?

Eleanor Scholey. Employment law specialist at Harbottle and Lewis

“Employers will be able to defend claims if they – Get to grips with their obligations, inform and train senior management and update equal opportunities policies accordingly”

 The Times, 7th October 2010

·         What are “Protected characteristics”?

·         What new definitions of discrimination fall within the legislation?

·         What are your responsibilities for the behaviours of 3rd parties?

·         How does the Equality Act impact on existing legislation?

·         Do your existing policies and procedures meet the requirements of the new legislation?

The Equality Act will bring additional responsibilities to organisations in the public, private and 3rd sectors.

Private organisations wishing to contract to public sector commissioners will need to ensure that their own policies and procedures meet the additional requirements placed upon public bodies.
